Andrés Vilanova
Carajo
Andrés Vilanova was
born on August 27, 1979 in Madrid, Spain,
in the neighborhood of Moratalaz. Andrés
is the first son of Dafne and Miguel Vilanova.
His parents moved to Spain as a consequence
of the intense political conflicts in
Argentina during those times. The family
stayed in the old continent until 1984
when they decided to return to Argentina.
Andres’ passion for the drums
manifested at the early age of four. When he was thirteen he decided that he
should study seriously. His first teacher
was Héctor Ruiz, followed by Juan Rodriguez. Andrés then had the
chance to study with Martín Carrizo, who he admired because Carrizo was
the drummer of A.N.I.M.A.L., Andrés’ favorite band.
Martín
Carrizo had to leave A.N.I.M.A.L, so they were looking for a new drummer. Andrés
took this opportunity and applied for the post by delivering a video of his playing
to Marcelo Corvalán. He was impressed by the video
and, after a personal audition, Andrés became the new drummer of A.N.I.M.A.L.
Andrés
was only 18 years old when he was traveling to Los Angeles (USA), where "Poder
Latino," the fourth album of the band, was recorded. Since
Andrés incorporation into the bad was rushed, the drums for the record
were recorded by the North American sessionist, Jimmy De Grasso. However, Andrés
had an active part in the composition of the drum interventions in the record.
By 20, Andrés had already toured various countries as part of one the
most important bands of the Argentine Metal music. Even as a professional musician,
Andrés did not abandon his drum studies and was taught by Daniel Piazzola.
After
three years of playing with A.N.I.M.A.L., Andrés decided to leave
the band and focus on his personal development. Marcelo Corvalán, had
also decided to ldeave. Andrés and Marcelo met to arrange some pending
matters. In that encounter, they realized that they felt the need to build a
project where they could both evolve artistically so they started playing together
without a fixed plan. Hernan Langer, a long-time friend of Andrés who
played the guitar, joined in.
Soon the trio – Andrés on drums, Marcelo
on bass and Hernán
on guitar – became "C A R A J O". In a couple of months and after
hard personal work, they had recorded a demo for the press with the songs "Salvaje", "Pura
Vida" and "La Guerra y la Paz". They began to play live shows
and in July 2002, CARAJO edited their first CD, "Sacate la Mierda."
In
the year 2003 Andrés shared the stage with Gregg Bissonette doing a
clinic in a great Buenos Aires Theater for 1350 people. That same year Carajo
published the album “Carajografia”
In 2004 they released the album “Atrapasueños,” and in 2005
the acoustic album “Electrorrotoacustizado.”
Today, apart from the
tours with "C A R A J O", Andrés is studying
in the Municipal School of Music " with Juan Pedro Esnaola" of Buenos
Aires, In his percussion career, Andrés wants to perfect his integral
formation as a musician. Andrés, by his own merit, is expressing his aptitude,
his virtue and virtuosity, his persistance and his satisfaction with the road
that he chose for his life.
